The
rain season, the low temperatures and the cold wind, makes
this part of the world one of the hardest and severe places
to live. Due to its conditions, it is often called the "green
desert", name given by the explorer Charles Darwin.
Punta Arenas, the capital of the region, with over 120.000
inhabitants, has the only airport, built along side the
Magellan Strait, across the island of "Tierra del
Fuego". A city tour will take you to museums that
tells the history of the city, during the colonization
period.
250
kilometers north, we find the city of Puerto Natales,
located along side the "Last Hope" fjord. From
this point, trips to "Balmaceda" and "Serrano" glaciers
are scheduled.
A
North
of Puerto Natales, we encounter the famous "Torres
del Paine" National Park. A great outdoors paradise,
suitable for trekking, walking and camping. Many lakes
are part of this park: Pehoé, (crystal clear waters),
Nordenskjold, Sarmiento, Toro and Grey, where there is
a glacier with the same name. Visitors can also enjoy
the view of icebergs, close to the shoreline. Wildlife
is important and diverse: condors, guanacos, ñandúes
and foxes, birds of several species can be found, and
the luckiest might find a chilean puma. Rivers along
this region are suitable for great fishing trips and
the rocky mountains are a climbers dream.
Tierra
del Fuego, is seldom visited by land, travelers prefer
to do it by sea, cruise ship offer many circuits through
the channels and fjords, allowing you to discover many
points of interest and glaciers at the "Cordillera
de Darwin", going ashore is done by "zodiac" boats.
The extreme meteorological conditions, advice us to bring
suitable clothing. A
visit of 4 days is recommended, so you can enjoy all
the wonders of this part of the world.
